Just after midnight September first, David U. Roemer, 24, lost control of his motorcycle on the Glenn/Parks Highway Interchange. Christopher L. Squires, 26, was following close behind on a motorcycle and was unable to avoid the collision. Squires was seriously injured. Roemer was cited for not having a motorcycle endorsement on his driver's license. While Squires may have a claim for his harms and losses suffered because of the crash, insurance companies usually try to write the lowest possible liability limits [$50K per person/$100K per occurrence in Alaska], and often try to discourage motorcycle operators from further protecting themselves with uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Given the incidence of injury and death on motorcycles, motorcyclists should carry liability limits above the minimum and should get as much uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage as they can afford.
